Are Moms As Excited About This Seasons ‘Dancing With The Stars?’

Some cast members are making viewers swoon...

From the moment the cast announcement was made, viewers and the media began putting down this season’s ‘Dancing With The Stars.” They stated that the stars were lacking in drama. They also stated that the stars didn’t have real star quality. This may mean that the ratings won’t be as strong this season. Of course, it is also up against NBC’s popular show “The Voice.” But some moms and other fans may have been watching. If there were, they may have enjoyed some of the highlights such as seeing that Jack Wagner can dance, as well as act, sing and play golf. They may have also enjoyed watching Carrie Anne swooning over him.

If they are a Green Bay Packer’s fan, they may have enjoyed Donald Driver’s big standing ovation from the crowd. But what they may not have enjoyed is his low scores and the remarks Judge Bruno made about his dancing, such as comparing his dancing to a rooster chasing a hen.

If the moms are fans of William Levy, they may have felt the heat as did the crowd, when he performed his Cha-Cha-Cha. The fans screamed in delight as he sent a number of fans, including Judge Carrie Ann’s heart aflutter and Bruno. Bruno stated that he was the hottest package of the season.

The moms also may have enjoyed listening to Melissa Gilbert saying that she wanted to be paired with Makism. She stated that she had two ex-husbands and sons. She also seem to think that she could handle him and didn’t seem at all intimated by him. This may have impressed many who still thought of her as that little girl on the prairie.

As for the leaders of the night, that honor went to Classical musician Katerine Jenkins and Jaleel White. How long they will remain leaders will be anyone guess.

Americans: Are they getting ruder?

Abroad, Americans are known for some positive things and some negative things. Americans are friendly and polite, always remembering to say “please” and “thank you.” They are also known for fanny packs, loud voices and culturally sensitivity, but I’d like to think that the good outweighs the bad, right?

Turns out, Americans may be abandoning their polite demeanor. In her piece at Time.com called “Are Americans Over Being Polite?”, Aylin Zafar considers whether Americans are using “please” and “thank you” less and less because they are losing interest in being polite, or rather that they’re simply using newer phrases, but are still considerate in their interactions with strangers. She uses considerable information from a NPR piece, as well, where both sides of the debate have been examined.

Americans have been abandoning traditional phrases like “please” and “thank you” in favor of other sentiments. When dining out and asked for more food or drink, Americans may tell waiters “I’m good,” instead of “no, thank you.” And—much to a linguistic purist’s chagrin—instead of saying “you’re welcome,” plenty of Americans say “no problem” instead.

NPR interviewed Lisa Gache, the co-founder of Beverly Hills Manners, on the issue. This manners expert said that the abandonment of formal phrases like “thank you” in favor of really casual phrases like “no problem” indicates a larger cultural trend: Americans are obsessed with making everything as casual as possible. She thinks this obsession is making Americans ruder. Most Americans seem to agree—76% of Americans surveyed in 2011 said that Americans were indeed becoming more rude.

On the other side of the debate, Zafar ponders whether the replacement of traditional words with newer—still civil—phrases really signals that Americans are becoming ruder. Emily Post Senning, the great-granddaughter of Emily Post who formalized standard American manners in 1922, says that manners and standards for manners have always changed over time, as have the words to say thanks and offer appreciation.

Certainly, the issue seems to hinge primarily on the appropriateness of using casual words in a formal settings. Americans are certainly way too prone to make formal things much too casual; for example, our propensity to wear jeans to the opera or order a Bud Light at a fine restaurant. Is “no problem” appropriate for a waiter at an upscale bar? Of course not. Is it fine for a bartender at some divey joint? Probably.

What do you think that the erosion of “please” and “thank you” means? Do you think that Americans are becoming less polite?

Stock price of Bulge Bracket fall as a result of Greg Smith piece in New York Times

A very shocking story took shape this week with a mid-level executive at Goldman Sachs announcing his resignation via an Op-Ed piece on the New York Times where he let the public know about the money hungry culture that exists in the global investment bank where profit comes first before clients.

This was the first time that an investment banker has been so public in letting others know how much he disliked the work culture at the bank. As a result of this, share prices of Goldman Sachs tumbled and fell by 3.4 percent and the bulge bracket lost somewhere around $2 billion. There has been a mixed reaction with people at Goldman pointing out that he is mistaken and others very happy with his outspokenness.

This news story has rocked the world of finance and Smith talks about how senior-level bosses referred to their clients as muppets in his ‘resignation letter’ that is titled “Why I am Leaving Goldman Sachs”. Smith also pointed to Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein and President Gary Cohn as responsible for what Smith calls “a toxic and destructive culture” that exists at the firm.

All this is coming from a ‘low-drama’ executive and the Op-Ed even shocked those close to Smith. But then again Smith doesn’t seem to have been the stereotypical Wall Street type and for a long time when he started his career at Goldman and began climbing the ranks, he actually rented an apartment and never purchased a car.

So this attempt at trying to bring justice so to speak isn’t entirely out of character, but many investment bankers and those at Goldman point to what they feel is his stagnant career as the cause for this. Smith was getting paid less than norm for a mid-level executive making less than $750K annually.

Buford, Wyoming

Fated to become a ghost town?

It must be strange to be the only resident of a place. There would be nobody to corroborate your idea that people from your town or city are the very best of the state. There would be miles and miles of road without a streetlight or a business. It would have to make you feel a little bit like you were the star of your own Twilight Zone episode of “The Last Man on Earth.”

That’s how the one-and-alone resident of Buford, Wyoming had to feel. Don Sammons, the last resident of what’s been called the smallest town in America, is about to retire from his business in Buford and move to what will certainly be a more populous town.

It’s hard to imagine how a town comes to have so few residents, but still not be incorporated into another place. Most tiny towns like Buford don’t have any nearby towns by which they could be incorporated, dooming them to become smaller and smaller until they become virtual or literal ghost towns.

Unlike many places that face extinction when their last resident dies or is decides to move, Sammons departure may not leave Buford to wither into nothingness. The town is scheduled to go up for auction on April 5 at noon.

At the height of its growth, Buford boasted a population of 2,000 people. It first lost residents when the Transcontinental Railroad was rerouted away from the village, and continued to lose residents when they were no longer able to handle the rough climes of the Montana town. The town itself is the highest on Interstate 80—from New York to California—and has colder temperatures than anywhere else in all of already-chilly Wyoming. Additionally, I-80 between Cheyenne and Laramie closes down several times during the winter, further isolating the tiny hamlet.

Sammons and his family relocated to the tiny town in the 1980’s, but the rest of his relatives eventually moved away. Sammons stayed in the town, acting as mayor of the community and operating the trading post in town since the early 1990’s.

This trading post will be part of the auction, as will a gas station/convenience store, a 1905 school house that has been used as an office, a cabin, a three-bedroom home and 10-acres of land. Bidding for the town and its assets will begin at $100,000.

What do you think about the Buford auction? Do you think it will save the place from becoming a ghost town?

St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations Are Sweeping The Country

Here in the United States, it is celebrated through parades, parties, wearing official wear attire.

March 17th is officially St. Patrick’s Day. This is the day in which St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland, is honored. In Ireland, this is an official holiday. Here in the United States, it is celebrated through parades, parties, wearing official wear attire, eating green foods and drinking green drinks or dyed ones.

What are some of the events that are in store during this holiday in the US?

In Tallahassee, they are planning a parade in the downtown streets of their town. This parade is planned to start at 3:30 pm. After the parade a festival will begin. This festival will include entertainment and drinks, for all those over the legal drinking age.

In Dover, Delaware, The Irish Society is holding their annual St. Patrick’s Day party at the Elk’s Lodge. There will be traditional Irish music played by the “Sean Fleming Band.” The party will be held on March 16, 2012 at the Elk’s Lodge, which is located at 200 Saulsbury Road, in Dover, Delaware.

There are many events scheduled in Boston, Massachusetts for St. Patrick’s Day. One event includes a family friendly atmosphere to enjoy the parade. On Sunday at 12:30 pm, one can enjoy the parade and the family atmosphere at the South Boston Action Center.  If beer is how you picture enjoying St. Patrick’s Day, you may enjoy the gathering that will start at 10 am at the 3rd Annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration at Landsdowne Pub, in Boston, MA. They plan on having an authentic assortment of food and a huge assortment of beer.

For information on activities in your areas, check your local websites, newspapers and chamber of commerce.

Britney Spears and the X Factor

The X Factor has offered pop princess Britney Spears $10 million to be a judge on Simon Cowell’s show the X Factor. This was after firing judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger along with host Steve Jones. This has all been done by the Fox Network to create a big splash before the start of the second season of X Factor.

Britney is not happy with $10 million and wants more and reports have it that she might sign if she were offered in the range of $20M. Fox needs to get some big names to do the judging in an effort to compete with the likes of NBC that has shelled out $10M and more to Christina Aguilera to judge the second season of the rival show “The Voice” that premiered after the Super Bowl.

The two shows will be competing against each other in the fall and the X Factor wants Britney who has other ideas of what she wants to do in the fall. It appears that she wants to take up an offer to be a resident performer at a hotel in Las Vegas.

The icon who shot to fame with the hit “Baby One More Time” is actually doing some media training and will find it to her benefit to do something like X Factor that would provide her with a free forum. Right now, according to multiple reports, it appears that the Spears camp is coming close to a deal that would have her sit on the judge’s panel. She definitely has the star power and I am sure fans would love to see her on TV.

Day Light Saving Time Means We All Will Be Springing Forward, again

It also means we will lose an hour of sleep!

Yes, it is that time of year, again. It is the time of the year when daylight saving time is on our minds. It is also the time of the year when we all will pay for that extra hour of daylight savings we got in the fall. We will pay for it by losing an hour of sleep. This doesn’t sound like a lot of sleep. But this hour will actually wreck havoc on many people’s sleep patterns.

Research has proven that missing this hour of sleep will change people’s mood, their productivity, increase their risk for accidents and even heighten their risk of having heart attacks. For these reasons, many people may be asking why we even change the time twice a year.

Daylight Saving began when Benjamin Franklin was President. The idea came about to give us an extra hour of daylight during the spring and summer months. There has been debate about this issue since it first started. Farmers even stated that this disrupted the egg cycles of the chickens.

During World War I, Daylight Saving Time helped with the countries of Germany and Austria save electrical power. They began setting their time back an hour on April 30, 1916 at 11:00, pm. Soon other countries followed their lead.

Today, many countries, like the U.S., have their set times to turn the clocks up and back twice a year. Yes, these actions do continue to spark debate. They also have scientific reasons for many of these debates.

Many doctors have found that the change in the time upset our sleep patterns, especially in children. They also found that the higher accident rate the next day is not a coincidence. These accidents are related from a lack of sleep. What do they suggest people do to help adjust to this change?  They suggest we enjoy the morning light once we are awake, avoid the evening the light, and if we continue to have problems sleeping we should take a melatonin supplement to help reset our internal time clock.

Is ABC Fans Ready To Get Their “Dancing With The Stars’ Fix?

Will this show remain hot?

Season 14 of the hit television show “Dancing with The Stars” will be ready to start filming live on March 19, 2012. The media and the television network are ready to begin another season. The media is ready for the drama, the dancing and the possible mishaps. The television network is ready for the ratings.

K_MawdbfU2U

Yes, this is the show that usually brings in millions of fans for each episode? Will it do the same this season?

There was a huge interest in seeing who would be dancing this season. Twitter was a flutter before the big announcement. Fans were anxious to see if any of their favorite stars would be appearing some tweets were stating that people feared they would be late for work, as they waited impatiently for this announcement. Once the announcement came, some fans were happy and excited. Of course, this year’s contestants will include:

  • Gladys Knight
  • Melissa Gilbert
  • Jack Wagner
  • Gavin DeGraw
  • Donald Driver
  • Roshan Fegan
  • Katherine Jenkins
  • William Levy
  • Maria Menounos
  • Martina Navratilova
  • Sherri Shepherd
  • Jaleel White

The biggest surprise may have come with the announcement that singer Gladys Knight was dancing this season. The least big surprise was in hearing soap star, Jack Wagner, would be dancing. Yes, rumors stated weeks ago that this popular past “General Hospital” and “Bold in the Beautiful” star would be performing.

Will this show remain hot? Will it receive the ratings it always had?

Time will tell.

NBA All-Star Weekend

"As for the Celebrity game, it was Kevin Durant coaching the West and Dwight Howard coaching for the East."

The NBA All-Star Weekend has taken the spotlight off of the sensation that Jeremy Lin has become. But still, Linsanity was in effect on Friday as it was only Lin that was given a press conference when there were other stars such as LeBron James and Kobe Bryant who were also present there.

The Rising Stars Challenge pitted Team Chuck against Team Shaq and Kyrie Irving dominated for Team Chuck in this Rising Stars game with a stellar three point shooting performance which included 8 from beyond the arc and 36 points resulting in a victory for Team Chuck 145-133.

As for the Celebrity game, it was Kevin Durant coaching the West and Dwight Howard coaching for the East. Howard gave us a hilarious impersonation of his Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy before the start of the game. The East had a convincing victory with comedian Kevin Hart getting the MVP honors. Hart wished to share the award with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan who exploded in the first half with 15 points and finished the game with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Turning the attention to the Slam Dunk Contest – which used to be something that I would look forward to so much as a kid – it seems to be devoid of any real stardom this time around. Stephen A. Smith pointed out a solution on ESPN's First Take and it involved getting the fans to vote for who should be in the Slam Dunk Contest and he and Skip Bayless agreed that LeBron James has to make at least one appearance in the dunk contest.

Anyway, the real attraction of NBA All-Star Weekend is Sunday night’s NBA All-Star game and I am for sure looking forward to it.
