Social Norms: They have them, and we don't

Great post, and you're right on about fractured ideologies. If I can inject some optimism into the conversation, I've like to think they're evolving, rather than broken. In an age where global networks have connected us, I think we're in transition. We've got more of a "social paste" borrowed from unrestricted access, and cultures all over the world are experiening it. The Japanese establishment wants to throw out everyone under the age of 30 and start over. I think eventually even those Viennese are going to address the fallout of the new social "abnormalities".

Thanks for the optimism.  I agree that sometimes it's positive to break down restrictive social norms--and I agree that in some ways we are definitely evolving.  What do you mean by "social paste"? What kind of ideas does the Japanese establishment want to throw out? I would be fascinated to hear more about that from you!

I think of "social paste" as a kind of nebulous mixture of different social customs and values that we spread liberally over a broad spectrum of social circumstances...like a paste. As far as Japan is concerned, I was just referencing the social and cultural conformity of older generations, which are being challenged by the younger generations, which have adopted an independence that threatens the old forms of behavior.
